WHAT IS THE PLANETARY CONGRESS?
The Planetary Congress was set up in 1985 in Cernay, in France. Each year it brings together around a hundred astronauts, members of the Association of Space Explorers, each of whom has orbited the Earth at least once.
It is the leading event bringing together astronauts, cosmonauts and taikonauts of every nation, to allow them to discuss manned flights and future exploration projects.
Every year a different country hosts and organises it. In the last few years the congress took place:
- 2014: Beijing, China
- 2015: Stockholm, Sweden
- 2016: Vienna, Austria
The 2017 edition of the Planetary Congress is part of a very dynamic year, with the progress of the Proxima Mission of French astronaut, Thomas Pesquet (ESA), the temporary exhibition “Astronauts” currently on display at Cité de l’espace until the end of 2018, the 20th anniversary of Cité de l’espace! The City of Toulouse is also Chair of the Community of Ariane Cities for 2017, and has been appointed European Capital of Science (ESOF) until 2018.
The Congress promotes the values of the Association of Space Explorers . It was set up to promote to the general public the benefits of scientific research in space and space exploration, promote educational initiatives, and advocate true international co-operation in space.
THE CONGRESS REVOLVES AROUND A NUMBER OF THEMES SUCH AS:
- Thematic and technical sessions
- Open sessions for those involved in education, the general public and the media
- Ceremonies to honour institutions and personalities of the host country, featuring, in particular, the “Crystal Helmet”, one of the most prestigious astronautical prizes…
- The culture and tourism programme, to promote the wealth of the heritage of our region at an international level.
- The professional programme, so that astronauts and the leading figures in the industries and research centres can meet up.
The Congress sets aside one day as a Community day, so that its members can take part in meetings with pupils, students, teachers and the media, as well as local institutions involved in education.
You and the Congress ?
If the astronauts work together during the Congress, their top priority remains “to share the passion for adventure, and the discovery of space” as Claudie Haigneré emphasises, the French astronaut, sponsor of Cité de l’espace and member of the Congress’s Steering Committee.
